EG2D7988AIt was back down to Colwyn Bay, North Wales for the ExPix team on Sat 25th February 2012, for Battle in the Bay 9; the first mixed martial arts and full contact kick boxing event in the 2012 calendar of events organised and hosted by the Pound MMA, Edgehill Kick Boxers and World United Martial Arts (WUMA) Wales. Sponsored by the Computer MOT Centre.

Held once again at Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay Leisure Centre, the atmosphere soon started to build as fighters arriving for the official ‘weigh in’ were eagerly seen checking each other out, trying to suss out their opponent. With a full briefing and medicals before fighting takes place the Battle in the Bay organisors are really taking things seriously. This isn't some back street dog fight as many would asume with Mixed Martial Arts ( MMA) fights. With titles at stake everything possible is done to ensure that this event is run professionally. A production company are also following some of the fighters making a documentory to be screened on S4C in April  CWFFIO CAWELL (Welsh Cage Fighting) aims to provide an insight into the world of MMA. We'll keep you informed of the dates via FB when we get them.

Inside the arena, there was a surprise in store in the form of a new cage. Much wide than the previous cage, giving the fighters more room to move; it looked impressive, and with the white matt and better lighting, made our cameraman’s job so much easier!

As the action got underway it was obvious from the onset that competition was tough, and there was tension in the air for the diehard fans packing the arena from clubs around the country including; Fightbase, Team Mayhem and South Manchester MMA.

What followed were 14 bouts of pure raw emotion, fast and furious, adrenaline fuelled action with 28 fighters battling it out, fiercely trading blows. There was superb boxing action, awesome ground fighting and fantastic grappling techniques, in what proved to be an exhilarating, nail biting and exhausting night for the spectators.

Sam Edmondson v Aaron Johnson - Semi Pro MMA

This fight was probably one of the most explosive and exciting of the night with almost a full 3 rounds and what looked like a close call for the average spectator, but it wasn't for the judges. Sam was well ahead on points due to his superior accuracy from all three officials. Unfortunately for Sam Aaron managed to deliver a knee to the ribs that finished the fight in the third round.

Aaron Scot v Chris Simpkin - Semi Pro MMA

Another furious bout Chris Simpkin always looked in control as he powered his way to victory. With a stronger up body Aaron couldn't match him for power.

Lee Bryant v Mike Egan - Kick Boxing Welsh Title

A good fight showcasing skill and power, Lee wasn't able to over come Mike's composure, speed and power during this title fight.
