Going back to our Roots' is a new feature for the ExPix site and is all about the grass roots scene. ExPix have covered some amazing events over the years and have photographed and filmed some big, big names. But everyone starts somewhere, so this weekend ExPix spent some time checking out the talent closer to home
A quick Google search and we came up with the following; 'Build Rochdale a skatepark'; a Facebook group dedicated to finding a space, raising funds and liaising with the relevant authorities to build a skate park in Rochdale.
We started taking pictures of extreme sports over ten years ago when on holiday in North Wales. Wakestock for us was the start of it all and so began a mission which has seen us photographing riders and events all around the world. Often on the road, it's easy to miss what's going on on your door step, so we were surprised to have such a fantastic opportunity to get some pretty sweet shots right here in our home town.
No rules or regs, just REAL people doing their own thing! It's these people who fuel the extreme sports industries; they buy the mags, gear, clothing, have idols and want to live the dream.
In the meantime it's a sunny March Sunday in Rochdale...sounds like the start to a documentary about drugs, antisocial behaviour or something like that
30 years ago when skateboards first arrived in Rochdale there was a half pipe in one of the local parks. Cue political correctness and the age of suing and that soon disappeared.
Now there's a big scene in Rochdale with no where to go except the town centre, shopping centre car parks, or any street with a kerb or rail to grind. Strange when there has been talk of building a skate park in Rochdale for some time and the neighbouring much smaller town of Littleborough has one already.
ExPix decided to have a quick chat with Toby, admin guy for the Facebook group to see what it was all about and to see how we could get involved. He invited us to a meeting which is being held this week with the Planning and Regulations Department to discuss and arrange the uptake of land, but first we caught up with the local skateboarders to check out the scene.
The images that are illustrating this article were all taken in Rochdale. So bearing this in mind why don't you check out their facebook group and give them the support they need to get something proper in Rochdale. It would appear the council are 'supportive' but the main problem is going to be funding. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I'm sure the guys would love to hear them.
