Before ExPix was even born, we were privilege to photography some of the legends of extreme sports.
Back in 2005 when LG Action Sports hit Manchester we were there to capture the world’s greatest in action:
Tony Hawk - 12-time World Skateboard Champion
Takeshi Yasutoko – Japanese X Games, Asian X Games and Gravity Games gold medallist
Eito Yasutoko - Japanese vert skater and Gravity Games and X Games gold medallist
Ryan Nyquist – Californian BMX rider and multi gold medal winner in the X Games
Simon Tabron – BMX Vert British rider and holder of 11 X Games medals
Mark Webb – British BMX rider and X Games gold medal winner
Fabiola da Silva – 8 times World X-Games Champion Brazilian In-line skater
Jamie Bestwick – British BMX Vert 9 times World X-Games Champion
Ryan Sheckler – American skateboarder and X Games and Gravity Games Champion
Pierre Luc Gagnon – Canadian skateboarder and multiple X Games winner
Andy Macdonald - 9 x Skateboarding World Champion and holder of 23 X Games medals
Sandro Dias – X Games skateboard medallist from Brazilian
And so many, many more; talk about a photographer’s dream!
The following year and with ExPix up and running, the team headed down to Birmingham’s NEC to cover the largest urban sports festival in the UK; NASS 06.
2 huge events in less than 12 months saw us bag some pretty awesome images; not a bad way to start the portfolio!
Since then the ExPix crew have shot countless champions on land and sea and our images cause a stir where ever we go; so much so that at a recent event, one of our portfolio book was, how do we put this, ‘borrowed’ permanently!
10 years on and when the opportunity came to shoot Tony Hawk and Eito Yasutoko at NASS 2015 in the UK, we just had to be there.

Despite having press accreditation, gaining access to where we wanted to be in NASS wasn’t easy. The courses were closed off for sponsors’ use so it was time to get creative to find the best angles. And unfortunately, again due to restrictions, we weren’t able to film at NASS as we’d like to have done. So it was all down to the images. But we needn’t have worried; when a world class athlete (multiple x games, gravity games & LG action sports winner) said they love our work and wanted to get their hands on our image, we knew we’d done well.
Back to the event and fortunately the worse of the forecasted bad weather held off, at least during the day, which allowed the practise sessions and Qualification Rounds to be completed on Friday and Saturday. Whilst the wind wasn’t an issue for the BMX, skate and inline riders on the 14 ft. ramp, it did create a few issues in the Dirt comps, with a number of the BMX and MTB riders getting caught out on the tight technical course.

The highlight of Friday has to be the spectacular demos from inline pro vert skaters Eito Yasutoko and Tomo Hirano.
And when it came to Saturday, well whatever else happened action wise that day at NASS has to have been overshadowed by the unforgettable display from ‘The Birdman’ Tony Hawk and the Birdhouse Team and guests. Showing that he’s still got it at 47, Tony dominated the half pipe before being joined for a double up by Californian skateboarder Lizzie Armanto. UK rider Sam Beckett got in on the act too, the envy of skateboarders worldwide who would have killed for an opportunity to ride in the presence of their skateboarding hero.
Not to be outdone, BMX vert legends, Simon Tabron and Coco Zurita got some amazing height as they too demoed for the crowds.
On Sunday the weather was horrendous and whilst the indoor comps went ahead as planned, the outside vert comps were cancelled with the qualifying results standing as final. So with no action outside it was a full house inside the Pro Park as Ryan Taylor pulled off the first Double Flair in a Pro Park contest.
